COMMAND LINE The command line contains 17 primary commands you will use to mangage your files and directories. Any command on the command line is available to use, so long as no other window has pulled or popped onto the screen. The command with the dark background is the command that is "ready" to be called. If the disk has no label, then the message, "NO LABEL" is displayed. The SERVICES utility will allow you to create or rename a volume label. When creating or renaming a volume label, make the name as descriptive as you can, i.e., you might name your boot-up disk, "BOOT DISK", or name it "MAIN DRIVE", or, "C DRIVE". Press [PgDn] for more. DIRECTORY TREE The directory tree displays the paths of your current drive. The paths are organized in a hierarchy starting with the root of the current drive. Attributes can be any combination of "RHSA". "R" means "read-only", "H" means the file is "hidden" by DOS, "S" is a "system" file, and "A" means the "archive" attribute is set, while a dot means the attribute is not set. For example: R..A would indicate read-only and archived - the archive attribute is set when you copy a file [PgDn] for more, [PgUp] for previous. [Esc] to return to 1st HELP screen. STILL MORE FILE INFORMATION To change a file's attributes, pull- up the "attriB" options box. The options in this box act like toggles. In other words, if an attribute is "off" the command for that attribute will turn it on, or, if the attribute is on, the command will turn it off. Use the "tIme/date" command to change a file's time and date stamp. The maximum number of files SERVICES can list in any one directory is 855. The absolute maximum number of files on any one disk is 513,000 files. [PgUp] for previous. [Esc] to return to 1st HELP screen. DIRECTORY STATUS The number immediately behind "Dir:" is the count of subdirectories on the current drive. This count does not include the root directory. "Bytes:" indicates the total number of bytes in the current directory. If a file-mask has been set, then the "Bytes:" will be the total bytes that match the requirement of the mask. The number following "Free:" is the total number of bytes available on the current drive. This number is unaffected by any file-mask. Press [PgDn] for more. [Esc] to return to 1st HELP screen. FILE STATUS The number immediately behind "Files" is the total number of files in the current directory. If a file-mask has been set, then this number will be the total number of files that match the requirement of the mask. The number behind "#Tag" is a count of the total number of files in the current directory that have been tag- ged. KEY STATUS The "key pressed" status of your key- board's lock keys - [Caps Lock] [Ins] [Num Lock] and [Scroll Lock], as well as, the status of your keyboard's [Ctrl] [Alt] [Lt Shift] & [Rt Shift] are displayed at the bottom of the screen. Any "key pressed", that displays on the screen, will remain on the screen while an options box is being shown. Once out of the options box, if the status of that key has changed, then the "key pressed" message is cleared from the screen. Press Any Key For An Animated Demonstration SCROLL KEYS For most applications, the keys you will use to scroll with are the up & down arrow keys, left and right arrow keys, PgUp, PgDn, Home, and End keys. If you are using an extended keyboard and are having trouble with the arrow keys, use the set of arrow keys found on the number pad to your right. SCROLLING THE MAIN SCREEN Right and left arrow keys moves your highlight between right (File Info) and left (Dir Tree) windows. The up and down arrow keys moves your high- light up or down one file or one directory at a time. When you drag an options box, the choices dis- played will change to the appropriate options for the command that the box was dragged to. In other words, if you pressed the enter key when the "ready" command was "Archive" and you dragged the box to the right, your new "ready" command is "chg-Drive" and your options range from drive A: to drive Z:. SERVICES will work with PKARC/PKXARC, and PKPAK/PKUNPAK, versions 3.61. SERVICES limits you to 240 files per archive. These 240 files can also be archives, thereby, allowing a total of 57,600 files per archive. To create or update an archive, you must first tag the files that will go into the archived file. Press "A" for the archive command, scroll to the option and press the [Enter] key or press B, P, E, or D. SERVICES will then extract all the file names inside of the archive and show them in a window. Press the spacebar to choose which files to browse, print, extract or delete from the archive. This means that whether you are typing in a file name, volume label, or a password, the same edit keys serve the same functions. Although the built-in line editor is the same for all of SERVICES keyboard routines, pressing the Enter key with out typing anything will have a dif- ferent effect among the different op- tions boxes. MORE ENTER KEY When executing a file, the Enter key will have SERVICES run the file with out any parameters or switches. When setting a File-mask or doing a Search, pressing Enter without first typing something, is like typing an asterick. The asterick informs DOS that all names are acceptable. For example, *.COM (Enter & COM) means mask or search for all files with the extension .COM, whereas, *.* (Enter & Enter) is any and all files. [PgDn] for more, [PgUp] for previous. STILL MORE ENTER KEY When typing in a file name for the Rename, cOncatenate, and Archive com- mands, pressing the Enter key without first typing something, when the cur- sor is on the left side of the period will abort the edit. When the cursor is on the right side of the period for Rename or cOncaten- ate, use Enter to create a file with- out an extension name. THE LAST WORD ON THE ENTER KEY When typing in the name of a file, no matter what command options box is displayed, once you have typed some- thing, the first use of the Enter key will automatically put the period in the file's name and send the cursor to the right of the displayed period. In other words, to type in the name "YOURFILE.DOC", you would simply type YOURFILE, then press the Enter key, then type, DOC. You do not type the period.
